About the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum

The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum (Forsvarsmuseet) is one of Oslo's most rewarding free attractions, housed within the historic grounds of Akershus Fortress on the central waterfront. The museum traces over 600 years of Norwegian military history — from the medieval garrison culture of the 1400s through the Napoleonic Wars, the union with Sweden, two World Wars, and up to modern-day Norwegian military service and international peacekeeping missions.

The collection is extensive: original weapons, uniforms, medals, military equipment, maps, personal diaries, photographs, and large-scale dioramas tell the story of Norway's soldiers across the centuries. The WWII section is particularly powerful, documenting the German invasion of April 1940, the fierce but doomed Norwegian resistance, and the country's subsequent fight to liberate itself — complementing the nearby Norwegian Resistance Museum which focuses on the civilian resistance movement.

Set within Akershus Fortress — itself one of Oslo's most dramatic historic sites — a visit here pairs naturally with a walk around the fortress grounds, the medieval Akershus Castle, and the adjacent Norwegian Resistance Museum. The combination makes for a compelling half-day of history in one of Oslo's most atmospheric locations, all either free or very affordable.

Visiting Akershus Fortress

The Armed Forces Museum sits within Akershus Fortress (Akershus Festning), one of Oslo's oldest and most important historical sites. The fortress was founded around 1290 and has served as a royal residence, a prison, a military base, and now a historic monument. The grounds are free to enter and open year-round, offering dramatic views over the Oslo Fjord and the harbour.

Within the fortress complex, you can also visit Akershus Castle itself (small admission fee applies), the Norwegian Resistance Museum (separate admission), and various historic buildings from different eras of Norwegian history. The combination of all three makes for an outstanding morning or afternoon in the heart of Oslo.
